"Lighter" is a song by Norwegian singer and songwriter Kyle Alessandro. It was written and produced by Alessandro himself alongside Adam Woods. The song was released on 24 January 2025 and represented in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025. It reached number six in Norway, Iceland and Lithuania. 
Background and composition.
"Lighter" was written and produced by Kyle Alessandro and Adam Woods. Alessandro states that the song was inspired by his mother, who told him after her cancer diagnosis that he should never lose his light. The song is about fighting back after a setback and finding hope even in difficult times. In the chorus he repeats the statement that he is his own lighter. Eva Frantz of Yle described the song as mixing elements of medieval, Baroque, Norwegian folk and modern pop music.
An acoustic version of "Lighter" was released on 28 March 2025. Alessandro recorded a symphonic version of the song with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra at the , which was released on 18 April 2025 through NRK TV.
Reception.
Critic Tor Martin Bøe awarded the live performance three out of six points in the Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang. He described the song as ""Game of Thrones" pop" and criticized the fact that the drop did not quite manage to be memorable. He previously awarded the song itself two out of six possible points. Bøe criticized, among other things, the metaphor contained in the chorus that one is now fireproof because one is now one's own lighter. At Dagbladet, Alessandro received five out of six possible points for his performance at the Melodi Grand Prix. The reviewer Ralf Lofstad described the chorus as catchy.
Eurovision Song Contest.
"Melodi Grand Prix 2025".
" 2025" was the 63rd edition of (MGP), the format used by NRK to select its entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. The competition took place on 15 February 2025 at the Oslo Spektrum in Oslo.
On 16 January 2025, Alessandro was announced as one of the contestants of the Melodi Grand Prix 2025 with the song "Lighter". The song won the competition, earning the right to represent Norway in the Eurovision Song Contest in Basel, Switzerland in May.
At Eurovision.
The Eurovision Song Contest 2025 took place at St. Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland, and consisted of two semi-finals held on the respective dates of 13 and 15 May and the final on 17 May 2025. During the allocation draw held on 28 January 2025, Norway was drawn to compete in the first semi-final, performing in the second half of the show. The song qualified for the Grand Final.
Alessandro performed a repeat of his performance in the grand final on 17 May, with the song opening the final.
