Conrad Chapman was commissioned to paint 31 paintings of the city's defenses by Brig. Gen. Thomas Jordan, chief of staff to commanding Gen. P. G. T. Beauregard. He painted an additional 13 after the American Civil War during his travels to Mexico and Italy.
