AJ Parr (born Alvaro Parra Pinto, 1957) is a Venezuelan journalist, author, and consciousness researcher, known for his work on spirituality, human consciousness, and near-death experience. He has authored more than twenty books and conducted over 100 interviews with near‑death experiencers. He serves as a Senior Research Associate at the Institute for the Scientific Study of Consciousness.
Early life and education.
Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Parr developed a passion for writing from an early age, which inspired him to pursue a career as a journalist and author. During his childhood and teenage years, he began experiencing lucid dreams—later accompanied by spiritually transformative experiences (STEs) that profoundly marked his life.
Parr studied at the University of Oklahoma and the Catholic University Andrés Bello in Caracas, Venezuela, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Mass Communication.
Near-death-like experience and turning point.
In 1991, AJ had a spontaneous NDE-like experience in which he merged with the Light and into Oneness. experiencing a profound connection to all of existence—a sensation he described as oneness. He carried out a 30-year comparative religion study and authored over 20 books that explore the roots of religious thought.
NDE and consciousness research.
As part of his independent investigation into near‑death experiences, Parr has conducted personal interviews with experiencers from around the world, encompassing diverse cultures, ages, and spiritual backgrounds.
His NDE research inspired his bestselling book, "Stairway to Heaven: 25 Near-Death Experiences About Encounters with God, Jesus, and Paradise" (2023), which identifies common elements found in heavenly NDEs and includes a foreword by 
Melvin L. Morse.
He later published "The Girl Who Visited Heaven and Other Children’s Near‑Death Experiences" (2024), focusing on testimonies of children aged nine and under, with a foreword by Raymond Moody.
Through these interviews, Parr observed that while experiencers report highly individualized encounters they also describe many of the same core elements.
In 2023, as Senior Research Associate at ISSC, Parr took part in the BICS Challenge, organized by the Bigelow Institute for Consciousness Studies. Nineteen certified mediums were asked to connect with the afterlife over nine months. The project was led by Melvin L. Morse alongside Raymond Moody, Jose Miguel Gaona, Isabelle Chauffeton Saavedra, Lance Williams Beem and AJ Parr himself.
Parr developed the Tower of Babel Theory to explain why NDEs are so varied yet share common core elements. The theory integrates key insights from NDE research, interdimensional perception, quantum metaphysics, non-local consciousness, and Jungian archetypes.
